As one of the nation's leading grocery store chains, this corporation is always on the cutting edge. So when it created a new dry goods distribution center for the majority of its 70 supermarkets, it looked to install the most up-to-date inventory controls. The end result is a system that exceeds customer satisfaction goals and can accommodate future growth. The new facility is organized complete with wireless real-time inventory control terminals with computerized tracking, laptops, label printers on forklifts and voice-activated selection.
One challenge is the distribution of slower moving products which are in the AS/RS to eliminate long walk times. The grocer sought to integrate the eight AFT SRMs within the feed and discharge conveyors using tracking and control software to support product distribution. The system allows an operator to verbally direct product cases to specific stores and provides a "check digit" that shows the product that was removed as well as how much remains.
The solution was designed with a PC platform that can handle the real-time control of the AS/RS and connects to the PLCs that manage the conveyors. LED displays at the end of each aisle direct fork truck operators to destinations. The information is driven by the host system while the vendor provided the material tracking and control flow.
The integration of voice-directed "put" coupled with the buffering of product in an AS/RS has broad industry applications. The system has been so successful that the distribution center plans to have computer-to-computer product replenishment that can directly update product availability.
