In the highly competitive pharmaceutical industry, production excellence is prescribed for health care companies. So when an obsolete and unreliable sterilization system caused concerns, this Virginia lab decided to upgrade technology to eliminate downtime and low reliability. A chief concern was the tray management system that transports trays to and from the autoclave sterilizers. The system was both unreliable and obsolete for both parts and service.

To return the system to superior operations, the company installed a comprehensive replacement system highlighted by stainless steel replacement cars and deep lane remote vehicles (RVs). An end-of-aisle PLC interface allows status information and error control using a panel view. User-friendly operator screens provide easy access to real-time information. The design is projected to accommodate expected SKU proliferation for future business growth.

In addition, the process of managing the timing for inputting and outputting of the trays and their components is fully automated. The entire control system is now state-of-the-art distance meters for developing absolute positioning in the aisle. Combined with drive controllers, this gives the transfer car rapid and accurate positioning.

Communication is also key. On-board PLCs allow for communication to the end of the aisle. Using infrared technologies eliminates the high maintenance festoon. Automated systems with remote control vehicles and operator screens have eliminated high downtime and low reliability and have created 100% real-time tracing and control.
