A leading National Newspaper needed to have early and late news incorporated into a single edition. They also wanted the ability to use color throughout the newspaper and respond to advertiser's demands of more refined zoning of inserts. Coupled with an aging building and equipment, the decision was made to build a new printing plant to meet these business needs.

The Supplier acted as both the Systems Integrator and the provider of the roll Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS). The AS/RS consists of 2 aisles, each with a captive storage and retrieval machine (SRM) that has a 3000 lb load capacity. The rack's double deep capacity of 2,232 storage cells holds a 10-day roll supply.

Incoming rolls, unloaded by clamp trucks at the receiving dock, are moved onto conveyor where they are weighed and sized. Rolls move to transfer conveyor where a turntable, equipped with 2 scanners, continue the roll processing. These scanners capture bar code data that is important for roll tracking and performance history. Once scanning is completed, the rolls are conveyed to the AS/RS for storage.

When a specific stored roll is needed, conveyor transports it to 1 of 3 prep stations. Each station includes a downender, strip assist roller, scale, and AGV stand. After roll prep, an AGV moves the roll to either buffer storage or directly to the press reelstand. The reel room can hold 244 rolls in its buffer storage area.

As Systems Integrator, the Supplier generated RFP specifications, evaluated and assisted in vendor selection, and enforced adherence to specifications throughout the project's duration. This attention to detail brought the discipline of standards into the project, reducing costs, the number of suppliers involved, and amount of spare parts needed.
