Problem Requirements were high for this food retailer. High-density storage and a high-degree of system responsiveness were imperative for the 5-level pick-to-belt module used for storage of pallets and pick-place replenishment.
Solution The solution came in the form of six (6) automated, aisle-changing cranes in eight (8) aisles.
System Overview The installed system includes four (4) two-sided, five-level pick modules with reserve rack located opposite the pallet flow lanes. Six (6) automated cranes operating in eight (8) aisles perform the storage of pallets into reserve and the replenishment of pick lanes. An automated conveyor infeed system inducts incoming pallets into the system, performs a load integrity check, and delivers the pallets for crane pickup. Outbound loads, which can be rejects or stacks of empty pallets, are delivered to the front of the aisle with the turret style load handler on the crane.
By installing automated, aisle-changing cranes, this food retailer was able to enjoy increased storage density and higher productivity, while also enjoying the potential for expansion.
