    Features/Benefits Provided:

  • Completely automated pallet put away and retrieval for replenishment
  • Lower initial capital cost
  • 15% increased storage
  • Less than 2 year payback on full integrated system

Problem This general merchandising retailer had an existing 18-aisle bulk storage high bay area with 11-year old manual equipment. This system was resulting in higher costs, slower response time, and an increasing demand for off-site storage at peak times.

Solution An automated system upgrade was designed and implemented by the single-source supplier, which included rack expansion, six (6) automated pallet handling cranes that automatically change aisles, an automated conveyor system (with new size checking gateway conveyor, infeed conveyor, transfer car and outfeed conveyor system), and integrated radio frequency communications system. Also included was a Warehouse Control System (WCS) that was integrated with an existing WMS and manages the overall system. The design process included an audit of the existing system as well as complete system redesign.

The automated aisle changing cranes are 65' tall and cover 18 aisles, which replaced the 8 manual cranes operating on three (3) shifts. Implementation of the system was coordinated and overseen by project management, on-site management, and was rounded out with a 12 month full maintenance agreement. Customer has seen a less than 2 year payback on the fully integrated system.
