Atlas Steel Products, an aluminized and stainless steel service center and tubing producer in Twinsburg, Ohio, needed to purchase two new cranes and rectify some reliability and control problems with three existing ones. Atlas’ production was periodically interrupted by difficulties with two previous remote control and infrared systems.
Maintenance manager, Stan Runevitch, explained with some understatement that operations were anything but smooth. “We had trouble losing signals and, in some cases, the operator had to stand on a ladder,” Runevitch said. “We even lost confidence in our ability to control the cranes—a condition that was totally unacceptable.” These problems couldn’t have come at a worse time for Atlas who was in the midst of expanding its plant and needed to buy two new cranes and a reliable system to operate them.
The company chose Deshazo cranes, which came with a built-in answer: Cattron Group International AT Series Portable Radio Remote Control (PRRC) systems, included as standard equipment. “So we decided to switch over all of our overhead cranes to the same system,” Runevitch said. Atlas trained 12 associates to run the remote controlled cranes and the operators found the AT System easy to use and reliable.
Runevitch said the Cattron PRRC’s have responded well and have made a difference. All five of Atlas Steel Products’ cranes, maneuvered by the PRRC’s, move coils of aluminized carbon and stainless steel as well as blanks produced for customers in a variety of industries, which include appliance, HVAC and others requiring heat and corrosion resistant materials. “They are fantastic,” Runevitch said. “We’ve enjoyed great durability with these controls and the Cattron people have been extremely supportive and responsive.”
