A third-party logistics (3PL) business wanted to improve its competitiveness. It chose to relocate its West coast warehouse to a new, 300,000 sq ft, geocentric location that reduces shipping time for its customer’s web-ordered consumer products. This 3PL also wanted to provide enhanced order fulfillment and reverse logistics to their dot-com customers, using a state-of-the-art and scalable material handling automation system.
The Supplier was selected to provide the following:
- system concept and engineering
- zero-pressure accumulation conveyor in the pick modules
- three-to-one servo-induction merge
- high speed, bi-directional sliding shoe sorter
- pop-up wheel sorter
- swivel wheel sorter
- software interface with the 3PL’s client web sites and web order entry software, as well as ERP software systems
- Supplier’s product suite of logistics execution software (LES)
The warehouse management system cubes and weighs SKUs on receipt. Depending on SKU velocity and inventory availability, inbound goods are routed to either reserve pallet rack storage or forward pick locations. RF terminals have integral bar code scanners to ensure accuracy of putaway and picking. When consumer web orders arrive, the warehouse management system chooses the right carton and generates a shipping label. The conveyor system utilizes omnidirectional bar code scanners at the sortation conveyor’s induction points for accurate sorting.
The flexible value-added process packing area can expand or contract from 1 to 100 stations for handling dynamic volumes.
