Lifts from the Ocean Floor

(Download this casestudy in pdf format)

This Autoquip VRC platform lift features:

  • 8,000-pound capacity
  • A 102” x 120”, 25-hp mechanical drive, conveyor bridge
  • Heavy duty lifting eyes
  • Powered vertical gate on the lower level
  • Work platform on the upper level for lift maintenance

Autoquip provided a unique solution for a large West coast shipyard operation’s dry dock problem. The shipyard needed a lift that could reach 48-feet below ground level to unload and deliver repair supplies to large marine vessels.

The problem was three-fold. First, the dry dock featured a sloped wall that made it impossible for standard dock lifts to reach the ocean floor and the top of the dock. Second, the vertical reciprocating conveyor (VRC) lift needed to be removed when the dry dock was filled with salt water to allow the marine vessels to enter and exit the dock. The third problem was that standard products couldn’t meet the customer’s need. The customer was unhappy with the competitor’s unstable hoist lift option, carrying supplies up and down a 40-feet staircase or maneuvering a hook-andcable crane attachment.

No challenge is too large for Autoquip! Autoquip designed a Mechanical Four-Post Freightlift which featured a conveyor bridge to span the distance from the top of the dock to the VRC lift which provided a safe and efficient means of loading and unloading. Also, Autoquip manufactured the VRC lift as a twocomponent, unit that is removed from the dry dock basin by crane. The lift tower and conveyor bridge are then stored for the next usage.
