A tilter/up-ender meets customer challenge. Large, heavy, custom wood cabinetry must be manually lifted, wrapped and placed on a conveyor belt prior to shipping. This process originally required at least two men and carried potential for injury and fatigue. In response to this problem, a 90-degree tilter has been installed at the plant to make material handling and load positioning as safe and ergonomically sound as possible.

The process begins with the tilter lowered and positioned horizontally. Protective wrapping materials are held in place, using magnets, as the operation smoothly raises the deck to an upright position. The cabinets are placed up against the retaining lip of the deck and are reclined to the horizontal position. Wrapping is then completed with the cabinet at hip-level thus reducing the potential for back strain. The tilter lip will flip down like a pick-up truck tailgate for access to the bottom of the cabinet. Next, the cabinet is placed on a transfer cart at the same height as the deck and transferred to a conveyor line for final shipping preparations.

One worker, resulting in significant annual cost savings for the plant now typically carries out this operation. Further, the tilter frees up additional floor space in the factory that can now be used for other purposes. The tilter also helps protect the cabinets from damage during the pre-shipping process. Employee morale and stamina is increased as their physical effort is reduced.

By using the custom-designed tilter, the customer's goals of increasing employee safety and reducing costs have been achieved.
