A major producer of hospital furniture recently converted their existing assembly line for the new medical/surgical beds in order to include additional medical features.
The assembly manufacturing process now includes ergonomic improvements in workstations, tools and assembly methods. In order to keep all the work within the hip-to-shoulder range, preferably waist-to-shoulder range, to reduce worker stress and promote a safer assembly environment, a mechanism was designed around an inverted lift that is mounted overhead around the track of travel. The lift uses double-acting hydraulic cylinders to control motion for positive up and down movement. Trapped roller ride in a U-shaped track, which allows load movement without the worker having to physically lift it at any time while performing the workstation assembly tasks.
This new compact, heavy-duty inverted lift provided the key component to this difficult assembly problem…a doubleacting application using this innovative product. The new assembly line became operational in February 2000, and now the three-position lowering mechanism provides an essential solution, with a more safe and productive manufacturing environment and increased worker comfort and safety.
