(Download this casestudy in pdf format)

Features/Benefits Provided:
  • Greatly Improved Ergonomics
  • Fast, Precise Handling
  • Reduction in injuries
  • On time requirements met

The Opportunity
In 1990, 275,000 passengers passed through the Leipzig/Hall Airport in Germany, by 1995 that number had grown to 2 million and today more than 4.5 million passengers per year utilize this hub. In order to accommodate such a huge increase in traffic, an advanced infrastructure was required. Baggage handling was an area that needed special attention in order to accommodate the ever increasing numbers of flights. In order to prevent cumulative trauma injuries to baggage handlers, a flexible, fast and reliable method of handling was needed.

The Solution
A DEMAG ALU Enclosed Track Single Girder Crane with a High Speed Rocker Switch style hoist was installed along the sides of a 75’ long oval conveyer belt. The 13’ lightweight Aluminum Crane Girders allow the bags to be moved from conveyer to cart with minimum effort. The hoist with Stepless Variable Speed lifting (3 - 200) FPM insures that the operator can safely control and lift at any required speed.

Wrap up

  • The baggage handlers are extremely happy with the cranes.
  • Studies by the airport concluded that the cranes reduce injuries in the areas where they are installed.
  • Once again, DEMAG was able to offer a complete solution, (crane and hoist) that met all requirements.
