General Information & Brief Economic Summary
Australia's developed market economy is dominated by its
services sector (70% of GDP), yet it is the agricultural and
mining sectors (7% of GDP combined) that account for the bulk
(57%) of Australia's goods and services exports. Australia's
comparative advantage in primary products is a reflection of
the natural wealth of the Australian Continent and its small
domestic market; 19.5 million people occupy a continent the
size of the contiguous United States. Australia is again one of
the fastest growing economies.

Standards
Australia is a signatory to the GATT/WTO Standards Code. Use
of quality standards, such as the ISO 9000 series, is
increasing. Standards Australia, the national standards body,
has a Quality Assessment section and can provide a list of
those companies adhering to the ISO 9000 series. Both Standards
Australia and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
in New York have current information of Australian
standards.
