Glossary

Walkie stacker

A power operated device controlled by an operator standing behind it, which lifts, stacks, and transports pallets.

Wall traveling jib crane A traveling jib crane consisting of a fixed or moveable hoisting mechanism and operating on a runway attached to the side walls or columns of a building.

Wall mounted jib crane May also be referred to as a bracket mounted jib crane.  The wall mounted jib crane is to the wall of a building by utilizing brackets.  These brackets allow the jib to pivot from wall to wall in a given radius.

Jib cranes may also be bracket mounted to columns. These jib cranes usually incorporate tie rods to add stability to the farthest point of the bridge beam.

Warehouse A  facility utilized to store, protect and secure items for inventory or staging for shipment.

Warehouse Management System An execution system used to manage people, inventory, time, and equipment related to picking and processing customer orders.  The Warehouse Management System receives orders from the Order Management System or the Transportation Management System, then relies on rules and priorities established by the user to optimize the space and work within the four walls of the warehouse.

Waterfall Descriptive term for the flanged portion of the wire mesh rack decking.  Most commonly the waterfall extends downwards over the outside face of the beam.

The waterfall should extend past the radius of the beam a sufficient distance to minimize the potential for accidental displacement of the decking.

Weather seal A rubber or canvas covered pad or drape that extends out from the dock face to seal the gap between the dock and the trailer's entrance.

Welded wire container A metal container fabricated from welded wire as a completed assembly for containment, with the possible addition of structural sections for additional strength and with optional hardware added for specific use and application.  There are three (3) basic types of welded wire containers: folding, non-folding, and rigid.

Wheel chock Blocks of rubber, wood or metal placed in front of, between or behind truck wheels to prevent accidental trailer movement.

Wide flange track beam H-shaped, structural steel track beams.

Wire mesh spacing The nominal center-to-center spacing of the wire mesh configuration.

Wire rope hoist

A hoist that utilizes wire rope as the lifting medium. Often powered electrically or pneumatically. This lifting device is made up of a rope storage drum, motor(s), gear box and braking system and is suspended from a monorail or bridge beam(s) by means of a trolley.  May also be mounted in a staionary manner.

Manual wire rope hoist are generally referred to as "pullers" and operate utilizing a ratchet and pawl tensioning technology.

Wire rope puller

A lever operated manual device, utilizing wire rope, used to lift, lower, or pull a load and to apply or release tension.  See Ratchet lever hoist.

Wireless controls Just as the name denotes, these controlling devices utilize laser, radio and infrared medium to a relay information to various types of material handling equipment.

Wobble stick A lever type limit switch that uses a fixed long slender rod as the actuator to detect objects moving in all directions in the horizontal plane.

Work station crane An overhead crane generally used for ergonomic purposes and consisting of bridge(s) and runways made from enclosed metal track.  End trucks attached to the bridge girder allow for ease of movement. The entire system is designed to allow workers to move loads by hand pushing the load with the assistance of a vertical lifting device such as a hoist or vacuum lifter.

Wrap around An attachment to a pallet which, when placed on the top of a pallet load, adds support and stability to the load and enables pallet loads to be stacked one upon the other.
